What is an Oasis retreat?

Description, Mission & Registration Information

OASIS: A Retreat for people facing cancer

With Mary Ellen Steveling, Tracey Eno, Michele Quesenberry, Melinda Gaines and Tamara Shahan.

Oasis is a one-day holistic retreat for people facing cancer.  This includes people at any stage of treatment for their cancer, people in remission, adult family members caring for relatives with cancer and other caregivers.

Like an oasis, this day brings rejuvenation.  Guests leave feeling relaxed, refreshed, & empowered. Retreats are held bi-monthly at Mary’s Hope on Church Cove. The tranquil waterfront setting, spacious grounds and beautifully restored Victorian home provide the perfect backdrop for the day.

The day includes:

•Deep Relaxation & Breathing techniques to manage stress and boost the immune system.

•Mandala, expressive art for healing

•Holistic nutrition education & a gourmet vegetarian lunch made with organic ingredients.

•“Loving Yourself” and unlocking your inner wisdom session

•An individual bodywork session: Reflexology, Trager®, or Energy Balancing

•Handouts including a relaxation CD, nutrition guidelines, and community resources.

•Time for quiet and reflection. Time to connect and share with others.

Oasis retreats are not a substitute for medical care but a complement to it.

Oasis retreats are a gift to express support and care for our friends, family members, and neighbors facing cancer. Because of generous community donations, while the overall cost per person is $150, participants pay only $40 - $150 according to their own assessment of financial need and whatever is comfortable for them.  The difference is covered by donations from individual community members, local business sponsors, holistic health and medical practitioners, and family & friends.  Please see our list of business sponsors below.

Please contact the Center, at 301-373-2522 or email info@joylanehealingcenter.net, to register or for additional information. The retreat is limited to 8 or 16 participants depending on the location. Cost for this one day workshop is $40-150 depending on participants financial need.  We now accept credit card payments (Visa/MasterCard/Discover).

Bodywork sessions explained:

Reflexology

Reflexology is the fastest growing complementary healthcare modality in the US and the world today. It can be used with any medical or alternative therapy, or it can stand alone as an effective health maintenance technique. It is the systematic, manual stimulation of the reflex maps located on the feet, hands and outer ears that resemble the shape of a human body. Pressure is applied using thumbs and fingers in small movements to stimulate an area far removed from the reflex point. It is believed to work through the nervous and subtle energy systems of the body.

Reflexology works with all the body’s systems to improve the function of the entire system, including organs, glands, and circulation. Reflexology is deeply relaxing, which allows the body to release the stresses and tension of everyday life and begin to balance itself in a normal, healthy way. When the body is balanced internally and externally healing can begin on all levels, including physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Trager® (pronounced TRAY-ger)

The Trager Approach is one of the least invasive forms of bodywork. It uses gentle rocking, stretching, and playful movement to remind your body how it can move with ease and freedom. Stress, illness, poor posture and repetitive motion can contribute to ineffective body use. The Trager method uses passive movement to dialogue with the muscles and the joints and ask, “What could be softer? What could be lighter? How could it be freer here?” Because the work is so gentle, clients often let go and relax more than in a traditional massage where they may be guarding against uncomfortable pressure. The repetitive rocking soothes the central nervous system and allows new, healthier feelings to surface. It is more than a massage: it is mind/body integration. People often say after a session, “I feel taller…longer…aligned…relaxed yet energized…the pain is gone…I didn’t realize how much I was holding on…” With this new awareness, people can recognize tension when it appears, and release it by recalling the freedom that they experienced during their Trager session.   For more info please see www.tragerus.org (of particular interest: click Articles & Links, then click ‘Trager Approach and Breast Cancer—Mary Openlander’)
